Protect Yourself From Skimming
What is skimming? Skimming happens when a skimmer is attached or inserted into an ATM or other card device. Once attached or inserted, the skimmer steals information from a credit or debit card with a magnetic strip. When your credit or debit card is swiped through a skimmer, the device captures valuable information from the card's magnetic strip. That stolen information is used to make fraudulent charges either online or with a duplicate/counterfeit card.
Skimmers have become almost undetectable on ATM's and other devices. When swiping your card to complete a financial transaction (typically at an ATM or a gas station) your card information could be stolen.
The result? There could be a financial loss to you or your financial institution. Thieves who set up skimming devices on ATMs or other machinery use the stolen data to make charges against your account. This could freeze up your funds and requires you to file a dispute.
Here are some basic guidelines to avoid skimming scams:
•Be diligent and inspect the card reader when at the ATM or gas station pump.
•Pull on the card reader to make sure no skimmer is inserted.
•If you are using a gas station "pay at the pump", make sure the pump includes security tape and that the seal is not broken.
•Use pumps that are closer to the gas station doors and avoid pumps that are further out.
•Verify if there is any tape in the reader. If you find something, notify the gas station immediately.
•Try to use ATMs at a credit union. A list of ATM's that are a part of the Service Center Network can be found here.
•Avoid using standalone ATM machines.

Don't Take the Bait -- Protect Yourself from Phishing Scams
Phishing is a type of online scam designed to get important personal data from you – like your Social Security number, credit card numbers, passwords, account data and other personal identifying information. Every day, scammers send out millions of fraudulent emails that claim to come from websites you most likely trust, like your credit union, and then request your personal information. They then steal your personal information, leaving you the victim of a phishing scam.
Keep these phrases in mind to help identify fraudulent emails:
•Verify your account
Legitimate businesses will never ask you to send passwords, login names, Social Security numbers or any other personal information via email
•If you don't respond within 72 hours, your account may be closed
This is an attempt to create a sense of urgency, so you feel like you don't have time to verify their information through the proper channels
•Dear Valued Member
Phishing messages are generally sent out as mass emails and aren't personalized with your name
•Click the link below to access your account now
The website address listed in the email looks real, but if you hold your cursor over it, you'll see a new address pop up that looks nothing like the real address. Avoid clicking on suspicious links in any email.
Protect yourself by adhering to the following:
•Do not hit "reply."
Contact the company or agency cited in the email directly by telephone or visit their website.
•Be cautious about e-mailing your personal information
A padlock icon at the bottom of the browser window or "https" in the website address means your information should be secure.
•Review statements as soon as they arrive
Review your credit card and account statements for invalid charges. If the statement is noticeably late, call your credit union to confirm your address and account balances.
•Report "phishy" emails
If you ever suspect any type of suspicious activity, report it to the proper authorities immediately. Contact your credit union to confirm whether the email or website is legitimate. Sooper Credit Union will never send you an email asking for your personal information.
